NHTSA New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) Side Pole Impact:
A small-sized adult female crash test dummy is placed in the driver's seat and is secured with a seat belt. The test vehicle, angled at 75 degrees, is then pulled sideways at 20 mph (32km/h) into a 25-cm diameter pole at the driver's seating location. This test mimics a side impact crash involving a narrow, fixed object like a utility pole or tree. 1 star is the lowest rating; 5 stars is the highest. More stars equal safer cars.

The Honda pilot is a pretty safe vehicle, though most of the crash tests they do are unnecessary, like the pole and the offset test. I think the most important ones are front end, rear end, side impact (by car), and rollover.
In Europe it was sold as Triumph Acclaim, british version of Honda Ballade (Civic sedan) with 1335cm3 Civic engine. A very good car, but I can't believe that the 1996-2000 Civic sedan does much worse at the same rear crash test (see the test on RUclips)! How is it possible ?!

One thing of note, to make it relatively safe add new belts. See how you would eat the steering wheel before it locks? I don't want flail chest over a 67yo smashing the brakes, assuming you don't either.

I just bought one of these trucks used a month ago. Pretty impressed with the test results and its nice to see the manufactures are putting effort into the big consumer trucks and not just the small ones. First vehicle I've owned with the swanky side air bags.
People here are calling the Malibu a big, heavy car, but it's really just an intermediate of moderate weight. A Beetle is just an abdurdly lightweight automobile. Beetles are pretty tough on their own, they aren't heavy enough to hurt themselves. But in an impact with a 4,900 pound station wagon, for instance, say both cars are going thirty miles an hour and hit head on, and say the big car weighs twice as much as the beetle. The big car is going to lose half its speed, so for the driver of that car, it feels like hitting a wall at fifteen. For the driver of the Beetle, he is now going from thirty miles an hour forwards, to fifteen miles an hour backwards. That's about like hitting a wall at 45 miles an hour, which the driver may or may not feel at all. Vehicles don't get much lighter than a vehicle, but they get as heavy as thirty ton trucks fairly frequently. I beleive lightweight economy cars are an unsafe idea in a world of heavy vehicles. I do not know way to solve this problem.

Ford Pinto was the sacrificial lamb because of what Lee said in the Ford Pinto memo, every small car of the 70s had this same problem with the gas tank at any speed over 25mph, the pinto got targeted by the media, thats the difference.

My wife was driving a type 3 station wagon style VW. She was t- boned at 60 miles per hour. When the paramedics got there she was in the passenger seat. The entire drivers side of the car was in the gear shift area
